Queensland Lawn Care: What To Do Each Season for a Lush, Weed-Free Lawn

Queensland lawns grow differently to lawns in other states. Our heat, humidity, storms and long summers mean you need a lawn-care plan tailored specifically for Brisbane and South-East Queensland conditions.

Here’s your seasonal breakdown — plus how BLITS keeps lawns looking lush year-round.

Spring (September–November): Growth Season Prep

Spring is when your lawn wakes up.

What to do:

• Aerate compacted soil
• Apply a slow-release fertiliser
• Treat for bindii before it seeds
• Top-dress uneven areas
• Start mowing weekly

Why it matters: Healthy spring growth equals a stronger lawn for summer heat.

Summer (December–February): Heat, Storms & Lawn Grubs

What to do:

• Mow regularly (never scalp)
• Deep water early morning
• Treat lawn grubs as soon as you see signs
• Apply soil wetting agent if hydrophobic
• Control weeds before they spread

Why it matters: Summer is the biggest stress period for Brisbane lawns.

Autumn (March–May): Repair & Strengthen

What to do:

• Apply a high-nitrogen autumn fertiliser
• Overseed patchy areas
• Continue grub prevention
• Raise mowing height slightly

Why it matters: Autumn is repair season, especially after heavy summer use.

Winter (June–August): Keep It Tidy

Queensland lawns don’t go completely dormant, but growth slows.

What to do:

• Reduce mowing frequency
• Keep weeds out (Capeweed, Wintergrass)
• Avoid overwatering
• Prepare for spring with light fertiliser
